Safety harnesses used for fall protection must be removed from service and discarded immediately if any of the following conditions are observed:

• The webbing has cuts, tears, fraying, or significant wear.
• Stitching has come undone, broken, or become damaged.
• Metal components (D-rings, buckles, connectors, or hooks) show cracks, deformation, excessive wear, corrosion, or do not function properly.
• The harness has been exposed to chemicals, heat, welding spatter, or any other conditions that may reduce the strength of the material. To avoid exposure to chemicals, grease, and welding spatter, the harness should, where possible, be protected by wearing it underneath work clothing.
• Harness markings, identification labels, or inspection records have become worn and are no longer legible.
• The harness has been subjected to a fall arrest event, or there is uncertainty regarding the load it has experienced. After a fall, the harness must generally be removed from service and inspected or discarded in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
• The service life specified by the manufacturer has expired, or the periodic inspection is overdue.

In addition, the user must carry out a visual inspection before each use. A periodic inspection performed by a competent and authorized inspector should typically be conducted at least once a year, or in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
